ISF filing basics: the “10+2” Importer Security Filing

The Importer Security Filing (ISF, or “10+2”) is required for ocean cargo bound for the U.S. Learn who files it, what data is needed and why timing matters.

The Importer Security Filing, known as ISF or “10+2”, is an electronic filing required for most ocean cargo arriving in the United States. It consists of ten data elements supplied by the importer and two supplied by the carrier. The importer, or a licensed customs broker acting for the importer, must submit it.

The filing must generally be made at least 24 hours before the cargo is loaded onto the vessel at the foreign port. Late, missing or inaccurate filings can lead to penalties and cargo holds, so send shipping documents to your broker early.
