Country of origin marking: the basic rules

Most imported goods must be marked with their country of origin in English. Learn the basic requirements and the cost of getting marking wrong.

U.S. law generally requires every imported article, or its container, to be legibly and permanently marked in English with the country of origin, in a conspicuous place and in a way suited to the nature of the item, for example “Made in Vietnam”.

Some articles are exempt, but if required marking is missing or incorrect, CBP may require the goods to be marked before release and can assess an additional marking duty. Origin marking is separate from other labeling rules and from the rules that decide which country is the origin.
