USDA and Fish & Wildlife inspections: what to prepare

Plant, animal and wildlife products may need USDA or U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service clearance. See when these agencies get involved and what to prepare.

Beyond CBP, several agencies control specific goods. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s APHIS reviews plant and animal products, including items that could carry pests, and enforces rules on wood packing material. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) regulates wildlife and wildlife products, which can require permits and a declaration, and inspection at designated ports.

These checks can add time and cost, so identify them early. Tell your broker if your goods contain wood, plant material, leather, shell, bone or other animal-derived content, and ask about permits before the shipment sails.
